| One of the top post players in the NCAA, 6’8, 250-pound Demetrius Nelson, who was named to the 2009 CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-American team. Nelson, who led his Citadel Bulldogs to their most successful season ever (20-13) in school history this past season, was named to the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) All-District 22 first team and honored as a first-team Southern Conference selection by both the coaches and media, respectively. With Demetrius leading the way, the Citadel was the most improved team in the country, winning 14 more games than the previous season. Nelson, who graduated with a business degree in 2008, led Citadel in scoring this season at 16.4 points per game, while gathering 6.5 rebounds per contest. He shot 59.6% from the field and 77.3% from the free throw line as a senior. He was second in the Southern Conference in field goal percentage this season and he ranks tied for #4 all-time in the conference. The big man had a career field goal percentage of 53%. He also played in 129 games in his Citadel career, which is a new record. He is the 9th leading scorer in Citadel history with 1,264 points for his collegiate career. Demetrius is 10th all-time in school history for rebounds, with 626 boards. Demetrius had personal game highs this season of 29 points (versus Western Carolina) and 14 rebounds (twice, against Tennessee-Chattanooga and Davidson, respectively). An excellent free throw shooter, Nelson had several prominent performances from the charity stripe, including games of 15-18 (Western Carolina), 13-14 (UNC Greensboro) and 12-12 (Georgia Southern). He was named Southern Conference Player of the Month for his superb play in February of this year; it was the first time that any Citadel player was accorded this honor. Demetrius is a big, strong and physical inside presence. He’s got great hands and scores well in the paint, with his power moves, jump hook and turnaround/fade-away jumpers. He finishes well around the basket. Nelson also has the ability to face-up, shoot with touch and put the ball on the floor and attack the basket. Defensively, he plays solid position defense. Knows how to play big and he moves well on the floor. He is what they call in the U.S., "a grinder." Someone who plays hard and keeps working the entire game. |
